Imagine being away from home... far away. Not just a few cities away, or even a few states away, but oceans away. Literally.
Hundreds of international students who travel to Durham each year experience this exact circumstance. They're in a new place, a new country, often with little or no connection to anyone around them in this new culture. For this reason Dayspring has made outreach to international students at Duke University a primary focus of our ministry. For several years we have invested in the international student community at Duke by offering monthly shopping trips for them. Most international students have no other means of transportation to or from shopping areas...
Recently, we decided to make international student ministry an even more significant part of our church's DNA. Building on our monthly shopping trip ministry, we will offer students an opportunity to build relationships that go beyond “we take you shopping once a month”. We want to speak love and encouragement to Duke's International House, and build friendships with these students who are immersed in the culture and demands of an unfamiliar place.
As a church we strive to fulfill Jesus' Great Commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves, and the Great Commission, “go and make disciples of all nations.” As a result, we have a love and passion for supporting foreign missions, and we also realize that we can continue to fulfill this command in our very own city, because “the nations” are right here at our front door!
